When people think about careers in technology, technical skills are often the first thing that comes to mind. But are they really the most important?
During a recent HER TECH partner meeting, we asked consortium members a simple question: What skills will be most important for girls in the future of tech?
The answers were revealing.
Rather than focusing on programming or artificial intelligence, our partners identified self-confidence and critical thinking as the two most important skills for the future. Problem-solving, communication, creativity and leadership also ranked highly, while coding skills appeared much lower on the list.
These results closely reflect what the HER TECH project has been discovering through its research across Europe. Girls’ participation in ICT is influenced by much more than technical knowledge. Feeling confident, having opportunities to think critically, collaborate and solve real-world problems can make a lasting difference in whether they choose to pursue technology-related studies and careers.
This is why HER TECH focuses not only on digital skills, but also on creating learning environments where girls feel supported, recognised and empowered to explore technology on their own terms.
Sometimes, the most important skills are the ones that help us believe we belong.
