HER TECH Insights: What Comes to Mind When We Think About Girls in Technology?

Words have power. They reveal not only how we see the world today, but also what still needs to change.

During a recent HER TECH partner meeting, we asked a simple question: What comes to mind when you think about girls in technology?

The most common responses were gender gap, equality and minority.

These words reflect a reality that continues to shape the experiences of many girls and women across Europe. Although progress has been made, women remain underrepresented in many ICT education pathways and technology careers. Stereotypes, unequal opportunities and a lack of visible role models still influence how girls perceive their place in technology.

At the same time, the responses also point towards hope. Alongside these challenges, partners mentioned words such as motivation, pioneers, impact and glass ceiling– a reminder that change is already happening and that many inspiring women are helping reshape the future of the digital sector.

This is exactly why HER TECH exists. Through research, educational resources and collaboration across Europe, the project seeks to better understand these challenges and provide practical solutions that help more girls discover their potential in ICT.

Changing perceptions starts with conversations. Lasting change comes from creating environments where every girl feels she belongs.

This insight comes from a Mentimeter session with HER TECH project partners.
