As our research activities move forward, one element is becoming increasingly clear: the importance of role models and systemic initiatives is central to changing the landscape for women in ICT and STEM. Girls are far more likely to say “Yes” to careers in tech when they can see themselves represented and supported along the way. That is why we are not only analysing structural barriers but also highlighting inspiring initiatives that make a difference on the ground.
One such initiative we came across and had a pleasure of speaking with in Belgium is CLUSITY.
What is CLUSITY?
Clusity is the Belgian #WomenInTech community dedicated to closing the gender gap in ICT and STEM. Its activities focus on three pillars:
- Connecting– through a digital platform and events, CLUSITY creates spaces where women in tech meet, learn, and expand their networks, with female experts regularly featured on stage.
- Supporting Companies– helping tech employers foster inclusive cultures via workshops, keynotes, and recruitment support, while also spotlighting female talent in the sector.
- Sharing Stories– its Bloom series highlights authentic journeys of women in tech, showing diverse pathways into digital careers.
CLUSITY’s mission is to make women feel at home in technology, provide career-boosting opportunities, and ensure companies actively contribute to gender equality in the industry.
This holistic approach ensures that change happens not only at the level of individual career choices, but also across the structures and cultures of the technology industry itself.
Why it matters for HER TECH
For HER TECH, CLUSITY offers valuable insights into how coordinated action between industry, education, and policy can dismantle persistent barriers. The initiative underlines the power of role models, mentoring, and community-building in shaping aspirations, while also addressing structural issues such as workplace culture and retention.
