Voices Beyond Formulas: Reinventing Science from the Margins

Despite progress in gender equity, women remain underrepresented in STEM fields, facing cultural, symbolic, and institutional barriers long before entering research or the workforce. Initiatives like She is a scientist APS are challenging these dynamics by blending research, storytelling, and creative practices to make science more inclusive, relational, and representative.

Through workshops, participatory surveys, and creative tools such as writing, drawing, and role-playing, the organisation gives voice to those often pushed to the margins, helping participants – from schoolgirls to adult learners – imagine new possibilities in STEM. These practices not only raise awareness of implicit biases and structural inequalities but also foster empowerment, confidence, and curiosity in fields historically dominated by men.

From exploring gender stereotypes to rethinking how science is narrated, She is a scientist APS demonstrates that achieving equity is more than increasing numbers – it is about reimagining science itself, centering experiences, stories, and perspectives that have long been overlooked.

By combining imagination, participation, and reflection, these initiatives inspire the next generation of scientists and contribute to creating a more diverse, just, and innovative scientific community.
