Podcast recommendations for and from women in STEM

In one of our previous articles, we suggested some books to raise awareness on the issue of gender discrimination in STEM, which continues to reduce the involvement of women in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Here again, our focus is on empowering women who may feel they have nothing to contribute to the STEM world, and debunking the idea that these disciplines are men-exclusive. This time, though, we’re doing it through sound. Here are four podcasts made by women in STEM, for women in STEM, to shed a light once again on the possibilities and the contributions of women in this everchanging, but always relevant field.

Hot Girls Code: A tech podcast empowering women.

If you’ve ever looked at a line of code and suddenly felt your brain exploding, if when you were little you told your mom that “You wanted to be a programmer”, or if you’re already in the know but you still want to level up your coding skills, then this podcast may be the right one for you.

Hosted by Aorthi and Lola, two Gen Z engineers, Hot Girls Code mixes coding concepts with real talk about gender stereotypes in the tech industry. Across more than 70 episodes, it makes programming accessible, smart, and surprisingly fun.

Empowering Change: Women and Girls in STEM

If technical coding stuff doesn’t really grab you, but you’re more concerned about understanding where all this STEM inequality comes from, then we’ve

got you covered as well. This short 6-episode podcast, hosted by Nancy Scales-Coddington from the National Girls Collaborative Project, explores what happens in the developmental journey of girls that leads so many to not choose STEM careers — and what we can do to change that narrative.

She Talks Tech

There are many women working in ICT, and this podcast by the African coder Hlulani Baloyi tries to give voice to women who have interesting visions and stories to tell. Their success and their background is explored in 54 episodes, where she interviews them to challenge the gender-biased vision of what STEM success can be, and to inspire new women to delve into this field.

Diverse: a SWE Podcast

If you want to focus on the engineering side of things instead, the Society of Women Engineers itself has got the podcast you’re looking for! With a whopping 330+ episodes, it really is impressive how many women there are as high executives in this field that we are used to associate with men exclusively. This podcast interviews a variety of women, exploring what made them successful, what stories do they have, and intersectionality.
